My 2005 Grand Cherokee (yes, that thang’s gotta Hemi innit) needs a new muffler. This isn’t actually news to me, but it’s now at the point where it needs to be done. I could use this as an excuse to buy a fun, loud catback exhaust, but I’m not.
Options to fix this included:
Mopar replacement muffler for $350 + installation

Walker muffler welded in place of the old one by my friendly local slightly run-down muffler shop called Mex Muffler - $220, all-in
Sure, I could get a fancy catback for the Jeep and spend more money, but really, it’s a 10 year-old vehicle that I bought for under 10 grand. I’m just trying to keep it nicely maintained while I have it, so it’ll hold its value as much as possible.
To that end, I keep a Google Drive folder with all of my service receipts, plus a Google Doc in that folder that lists all the repairs. Whenever I do get around to selling the Jeep, I can share that folder with a prospective buyer so they can bask in the glow of all those service receipts.
So, Mex Muffler ordered the muffler for me today, it’ll be in tomorrow, and I’ll head over there some point tomorrow to have them weld the new job on there. Good to go. I just hope they print me a nice legible receipt to scan!

Back when I had my ‘03 Ram 1500 Hemi, I put a Flowmaster 50 Series DeltaFlow on it and loved it. Nice little growl and rumble, but not very loud or droney.

Yeah, but you picked a Corsa exhaust as an example. That’s $1500 and it damn well better sound good.
He could slap in a flowmaster for $75 and get more sound but it would be full of drone.

My Jeep is my attempt to be practical* about a vehicle, for once. I see no reason to throw an extra $300+ at a cheap old vehicle when that money will not carry over at all to the resale value, and the only benefit is more noise.
I’ve got other various things to worry about fixing. It needs new front brakes, for example. So I’m trying to keep my total spending as low as possible while keeping things quality and reliable.
* Except for that pesky 12 mpg average fuel economy

Yeah I picked the better-sounding example to try and convince him.
He could also get exhaust valves to get the full-straight sound OR the stock sound at will.

I’m gonna have to do my muffler in a while. I wonder... how hard is a DIY muffler replacement?

Depends on if you have a bolt-on replacement or something that needs welding. Even if you’re bolting in a replacement, if things are rusted, it could be a big pain.
This is the Walker muffler that RockAuto lists for an ‘05 Grand Cherokee Hemi (I’m assuming/hoping my muffler shop ordered the same one). RockAuto charges $67 for this muffler.
The muffler is under the middle of the Jeep. There’s a small pipe on the front of the muffler with a flange that connects to the cat, a longer pipe that comes off the back of the muffler with a flange that connects to the rear section of the exhaust, and that rear section.
Effectively, I’m paying $220 for the muffler shop to cut the piping off the old muffler, weld that piping onto the new, $67 muffler, and bolt the new piece into place. They’re probably charging me a bit more than $67 for the muffler, but overall $220 ain’t so bad, what with my not owning any welding equipment.
Now, if I decided I wanted to bolt something in place rather than deal with any welding, the cheapest price I found on a Mopar direct replacement is $258.77 , plus either my time and effort getting it on, or paying a shop to bolt it on. But just the part still costs more than good ol’ Mex Muffler wants to do the entire job.

Hmmm... interesting. The bolt-in exhaust for my Focus is only $130. Of course it’s just a single exhaust.

Mine is also a single exhaust. But it’s a pretty big muffler, so maybe that’s why it’s more?
The Corsa video posted above is the newer WK2 Grand Cherokee. My ‘05 is a WK, which has a single exhaust. Well, unless it were an SRT, which has a dual center-exit exhaust. Here’s the stock vs. Corsa video for the WK SRT:

I also did this with my metro, but including the cat all the way back. $180, $60, $80 or something like that. Plus some new bolts and Hangers. I was battling exhaust leaks & a P0420 code for quite some time. It was nice to finally replace the whole thing & get it over with.
